Real Life Solutions and Simple Fixes for Serious (but Common!) Money Problems
“Are your finances a nightmare? It’s time to wake up from that bad dream and create a better reality…”

Sheryl Schuff

Dear Friend,
Are money worries keeping you up at 3 am?
Does this sound familiar?
…you work hard, but you never seem to have enough
…you can’t get a handle on your expenses
…your credit cards are maxed out all the time

And now you’re worried. Terrified.
You’re worried that…
- You’ll have to work for the rest of your life
- There’s no cushy retirement waiting for you down the road
- You’ll never be able to live the life you deserve
You’ve tried living frugally. And it worked for a while. You were able to pay off some debts. Maybe put away a little something in the bank.
But you were utterly miserable. You missed the little treats that make life more fun and enjoyable. And like a spending junkie, you went into a buying binge to dull the pain. All your good intentions went flying out the door, and you never looked back.
You’re running out of control, and you’re scared. Scared for yourself. Scared for your partner. And especially scared for your kids.
Listen, there’s a way out of this money dungeon.
What you need is a simple plan that will help you achieve big results through small steps.
Read that again:
Achieve Big Results Through Small Steps.
You can’t make big changes all at once. Your mind and heart will eventually reject them and you’ll only feel like a failure.
Instead, take small steps. Easy ones you can barely feel.
After a while, you can look back and realize you’ve made a huge impact in your life.
Here’s What Happened to Me…
I got my first checking account after I finished high school. My Dad showed me where to write the numbers and words on the checks, but I do not remember getting any explanation at all about how to keep track of what I was spending or how much money I had at any point in time.
Luckily for me, I am good at math and have an analytical kind of mind, so I did an OK job managing my finances. Actually, it was pretty easy since there was only me to worry about and nobody was handing out credit cards to college kids in 1967.
There simply was not a whole lot to manage.
After working for a couple years, I eventually got married and started a family. WOW. Things got much more complicated then. My husband and I had very different ideas about spending, saving, and investing. That made for some interesting discussions, a few major arguments, and a ton of stress.
We were both self-employed, so there was no employer provided medical insurance. The cost of our individual plan was sky high (and we had to have insurance because of some pre-existing onditions). When our income went South because we had too few clients, the inevitable happened.
More about that later.
My name is Sheryl Schuff and I am a CPA in Indiana. I have been in solo practice since 1976. Before that, I lived in Chicago, where I got my MBA degree and worked for one of the largest Certified Public Accounting firms in the world. But none of my degrees or business experience prepared me for managing finances for an entire family.
Were you taught how to do that when you were in school? They did not teach that stuff in any of the classes I took. I was left to learn the hard way. I had to figure it out all on my own.
I learned by trial and error. When money got tight, times were tough.
Mortgage payments were late. Credit card payments got skipped for 60-90 days at a time (including a drug store card that was used solely to charge a couple cartons of cigarettes every week). My credit score tanked. At one point, the water was turned off.
With two young kids, I was determined not to lose our house. So I started keeping track of EVERY penny that came in and went out and developed tools and strategies to keep our family afloat. I refinanced our mortgage when I barely knew what that meant (and when we had no verifiable income).
We made some pretty drastic lifestyle changes to save money and my husband found a “real” job.
It took us a while to dig out ourselves out of debt, but we DID it. We kept the utilities turned on, the kids fed and clothed, and bought a cheap used car, even though we were turned down for a conventional auto loan because of the financial mess we were in.
Our two dogs had an awful battle with fleas one summer since we decided we could not afford medication for them. (If I had a do-over, this is one decision I would definitely change)
But most importantly, we kept our home. No foreclosure, no bankruptcy.
All of our creditors were eventually paid everything we owed them.
That felt wonderful. I could not have handled doing things any other way.
In the years that followed, I continued to learn all I could about managing my finances, using credit wisely, saving on taxes. My son likes to joke about how far and long I can stretch a penny and says that my purpose in life has been to make everything tax deductible!
I have come to understand the details of the laws, regulations, and programs that affect all the money matters in my life, so I can make decisions to my best advantage. I have managed to refinance the house several more times, establish a significant line of credit, stash away an emergency fund, establish an investment account, and set up a retirement plan.
My credit cards are paid in full every month and my credit score is high enough that I qualified for 0% interest rate when I bought a brand new SUV three years ago. Today, my credit score is so high that I qualify for all of the preferred deals. I recently applied for a new Visa cash back rewards card and was immediately approved for a $9,000 limit.
Here’s what my credit profile looks like:
- Home mortgage zero balance
- Home equity line of credit $35,000
- Visa $9,000 limit
- MasterCard $10,900 limit
- Discover $11,000 limit
- Kohl’s (department store) $3,000 limit
- Cash back rewards card $9,000 limit
Since my house is completely paid off and my credit card bills are paid in full every month, my debt ratio is 0%. No wonder it’s so easy to qualify for good deals.
